Equine Assisted Psychotherapy

Our Equine Assisted Therapy (EAP) Programs

EAP is a type of therapy process that includes horses, a certified EAGALA equine specialist, and a mental health professional (may or may not be certified by EAGALA). Patients will be taken through several scheduled exercises with the horses during the session. Through the interaction with horses, patients are able to reflect, understand social dynamics, and practice problem solving skills. EAP is ground-based, so horses are unhindered and not ridden.

During EAP, many patients experience peace with the horses as well as a liberating freedom to explore. Horses instinctively will react to human’s nonverbal cues, so their interaction with a patient is often illuminating. After the session, patients are given the chance to reflect on their experience with their healthcare team.

In order to enroll in the EAP program, a patient will need a mental health professional referral.
